Ground: You must be constantly ready to embrace defeat and ruin or inhibitions will cloud your actions. Learn all things great and small within your craft. From the basic rules and laws to the fundamental principles and the deepest tactics or strategies. Understand the virtues of your weapons and master their applications. Practice using your tools and weapons.

Water: The spirit becomes like water, adopting the shape of its receptacle. Strategies must be learned and developed. Know which weapons should be applied in any given situation. Adopt strategies to take account of your current position and opponents. Become adaptable.The spirit of defeating one opponent in a given situation is the same for defeating all opponents in that situation.


Fire: The spirit of fire is fierce, so it is with battles big or small, this is the way of fighting. Large numbers move less easily than an individual and the movements easier to predict.
Take the offensive to dominate a situation. Attacking shows strength, defending shows weakness.
Train to make quick decisions for combat.

Wind: know others to know yourself. See yourself as others see you.
Follow your own style but understand all other ways in order to combat them.
Know yourself and know your opponents and plan your tactics accordingly to achieve victory.
Find the opponents dispositions and remain invisible, keep your forces concentrated.


Void: that which has no beginning and no end. Attaining this principle means not attaining this principle. The way of strategy is the way of nature.
When you appreciate the power of nature, knowing the rhythm of any situation, you will be able to hit the enemy naturally and strike naturally.
 

Fighting Talk
The main battleground is the place where fighting happens where pieces engage or this will happen in the future.
It can be one or more places depending on the situation.
In forming judgement a most important factor is which side has the initiative in given situations and where the opponent has
the initiative whether that particular battleground can be given up or not.

Do not fight unless the position is critical. He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.
Look for disorder among your opponents.

Strategy is the craft of the warrior, The way of the warrior is to master the virtue of his weapons.
The way of the farmer is to sow seeds and see them grow, with an eye on the changes of the season.
The merchant obtains ingredients and puts them to use, to always live by taking profit.
The way of the artisan is to become proficient in the use of his tools, to lay a plan and perform his work according to plan.

Total acceptance of death is the road to victory. Without it you still die, slowly, a bit at a time.
 

The reckless can be killed.
The cowardly can be captured.
The impulsive can be tricked.
The proud can be humiliated.
The kind can be tormented.
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.
If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat.
If you know neither the enemy nor yourself you will succumb in every battle.
